For our production of Paradise Blue, Studio Theatre is partnering with two DC-based organizations whose work echoes the concerns of Dominique Morisseau’s play: Capital Bop, which invests in the musicians and future audiences of the DC jazz scene; and Empower DC, which organizes DC’s lowest income residents and communities to work for housing, economic, environmental, and racial justice.

CapitalBop

Founded in 2010 and run by young cultural organizers and musicians, CapitalBop grows audiences and builds community around jazz because they believe it is important to the city’s historic identity as well as its contemporary culture. CapitalBop present grassroots shows, runs an education program that connects DC’s great teaching artists with students across the city, and runs CapitalBop.com, an online magazine and resource designed to help everyone from newcomers to diehards connect with the city’s thriving live jazz scene and musicians.

Empower DC

Empower DC advances racial, economic and environmental justice by investing in the leadership and organized political power of DC’s lowest income residents and communities. Current campaigns include tenant protections and fair housing, environmental justice advocacy in Ward 7 and across the District, creating accountability around the use of public lands, and strengthening DC’s public schools.
