Development

Development Apprentice- This position is open.
The Studio Theatre seeks a highly motivated, early-career individual as its DEVELOPMENT APPRENTICE. This position works closely with the Donor Relations Manager, Grant Writer, and Department Administrator on all facents of fundraising, including event-planning, corporate and foundation solicitation, major gifts, direct-mail, and e-solicitation. Specific responsibilities include: assisting with record keeping; conducting subscriber, foundation, and corporation research; coordinating and assisting fundraising events; assisting in the day-to-day needs of the Development Department as needed. Facilities / Operations Management Apprentice- This position is open.
The Operations/Facility Management Apprentice gains knowledge about the management and operation of the Theatre’s building and equipment. The position allows a qualified candidate exposure to the workings of a multi-faceted theatre, whose physical campus includes a three-building, four-theatre complex and sixteen apartments that house visiting artists.

This position will assist the Facilities Manager with the maintenance, repair, and operation of The Studio Theatre’s buildings and equipment. The Apprentice also assists in setting up and facilitating the use of the Theatre’s space by outside groups. Other responsibilities include assisting with accounting records, contractor scheduling, and facility inspections, as well as researching and ordering materials. Additional duties as commensurate with skills, interest, and necessity.

Applicants should be detail oriented, personable, and able to work independently under deadlines. Carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and other construction or building repairs skills a plus.

Production / Company Management Apprentice- This position is open.
The Studio Theatre’s Company Management Apprentice is the primary point of contact between visiting theatre artists and Studio Theatre staff.  The Apprentice is a part of the production department team and manages a $20K annual budget.

The Apprentice will learn the basics of artist hospitality and will arrange artists’ travel to and from Washington, as well as their accommodations while here. The Apprentice will also oversee and help to maintain sixteen newly renovated and decorated artist housing units owned by the Theatre in Dupont Circle; act as Resident Assistant at Butler House, Studio’s 6-unit Apprentice Housing in Dupont Circle; assist with Production Meetings, Opening Nights, and the annual Gala; and provide administrative assistance to the production office, and to shops as needed.

This is an ideal position for enthusiastic, personable candidates who love working with theatre artists and are interested in production management. Applicants should have a high degree of personal organization, strong interpersonal skills, facility with Excel, a valid driver’s license, and be comfortable driving an eight-passenger van. 

Artistic Apprentice - This position is open.
The Studio Theatre’s Artistic Apprenticeship is an immersive experience, giving the apprentice first-hand experience in the rigors and rewards of the artistic activities of one of the country’s most respected midsized theatres as it expands its new play and international programming. Through daily interaction with members of Studio Theatre’s artistic staff and direct mentorship by the Artistic and Literary Directors, the position provides a chance to see directors and dramaturgs at work.

The Artistic Apprentice will serve as an assistant director on the five subscription shows during the season and provide dramaturgical support to others. The Apprentice will also read and critique play submissions, participate in the theatre’s season research and planning, write support materials for season shows, maintain a script library, and assist in the day-to-day needs of the Artistic and Literary Directors. Applicant should be extremely organized, personable, and possess a strong background in directing and writing, as well as an interest in dramaturgy.

In addition to the other application materials, candidates should submit up to five pages of critical writing (if you provide multiple samples, at least one must be about a play).

Business Apprentice
- This position is open.
The Business Apprentice will gain a firsthand look into all aspects of the Theatre through interaction with the Theatre’s finances. The position provides the opportunity to be involved in key decision-making meetings and a window into all aspects of theatre operations, including involvement in theatre activities.

Responsibilities include: processing cash receipts, accounts payable, posting, monthly department reconciliations, the budgeting process for the Business department and the Theatre, the preparation and performance of the Theatre’s annual audit, and other day-to-day needs of the department and Theatre. Additional projects may be assigned based on skill level.

Ideal candidates will be interested in theatre and financial management, be detail-oriented, and possess a good interpersonal demeanor and basic computer and data entry skills.

Carpentry/Scene Shop Apprentice- This position is open.
The Carpentry Apprentice receives professional set construction experience working on 11 productions alongside seasoned professionals.  The Apprentice reports to the Technical Director and works and trains with the Master Carpenter, Resident Carpenter, and over-hire.  Work opportunities include wood construction, metalwork, rigging, and mechanics/automation.

Applicants must have carpentry experience, be organized and detail-oriented, and be able to successfully complete projects independently. MIG knowledge and/or experience preferred.  Ability to build from designer and shop drawings required.

Communications Apprentice - This position is open.
The Communications Apprentice will gain exposure to arts public relations and marketing experience in a fast-paced theatre. The Apprentice will arrive as the theatre is finalizing the schedule for the 2012-2013 Season.

The Communications Apprentice’s responsibilities begin with assisting on finalizing the marketing and communication schedules for the year. Other responsibilities include media tracking, market research, guerilla marketing, print and electronic advertising, publication fulfillment, and helping to develop and implement social media campaigns for each production.  In addition, the Communications Apprentice may assist on still photo shoots and video production. Qualified applicants may also have the opportunity to write institutional press releases and join the Studio’s proofing or fact checking committees. By the end of the fellowship, the Apprentice will have the background and skills to follow a PR and media path.

This position is perfect for a detail-oriented candidate with a can-do attitude and an inquisitive mind. Experience using Microsoft office products, database work, social media tools, photography, and a general knowledge of Photoshop is required. Knowledge of InDesign, YouTube, iMovie, and Adobe Suite helpful.

Conservatory/Education Apprentice - This position is open.
This Apprenticeship provides an opportunity for an individual to learn the inner workings of a multi-faceted theatre education program while developing and teaching curriculum for The Studio’s student matinees in Washington DC high schools.

The Apprentice assists in the administration of The Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory, a renowned training institution in Washington DC, now in its 37th year. Responsibilities include administering the Youth On-Stage Program, one of the Studio’s central outreach programs; preparing educational materials in support of the Passport to the Imagination program and teaching workshops to high school students; managing the Conservatory’s space; house managing the Conservatory students’ final scene presentations; and assisting in the day-to-day needs of the Education Department. While this position encompasses some classroom teaching, it is primarily an administrative position.

The ideal candidate is highly motivated and detail-oriented, and interested in exposure to the institutional needs of an active Conservatory and an expanding student matinee program.

Development Apprentice- This position is open.
The Development Apprentice will get broad exposure to The Studio Theatre’s fundraising program, receiving hands-on training in cultivating and stewarding relationships with Studio’s donors, as well as working with corporate and foundation sources.

This position works closely with the Associate Director of Individual Giving, Grant Writer, and Development Assistant on all facets of fundraising, including event planning, corporate and foundation solicitation, major gifts, direct-mail, and e-solicitation.  Specific responsibilities include: assisting with record keeping; conducting subscriber, foundation, and corporation research; coordinating and assisting with fundraising events; and assisting in day-to-day needs of the Development Department as needed.

Applicants should be detail oriented and highly personable, have excellent writing and computer skills, work well under deadline, and have the desire to be part of a great development team.

Production/Electrics Apprentice- This position is open.
The Studio Theatre Electrics Apprentice works alongside theatre professionals in one of the country’s most active and well-regarded midsized theatres. Responsibilities for this position include: Programming ETC Consoles with professional designers; supporting the Master Electrician in light hanging, focus, and strike; participating in all sound system setup and strike; and performing general maintenance. The Apprentice serves as Light Board Operator for a minimum of seven productions and for special projects as required.

Applicant should be detail-oriented and personable, with the ability to work effectively with many different personalities. Electrics experience required, as well as comfort with with heights on ladders and catwalks.  Experience programming light boards required. Familiarity with Clearcom and QLab software a plus. Sound and projections experience also a plus.

Production/Stage Management Apprentice- This position is open.
The Stage Management Apprenticeship provides a unique opportunity to learn all aspects of the work of Actors Equity Association (AEA) stage managers. This position reports to the Resident Stage Manager and the Production Manager, and works closely with the Technical Director, Properties Master, Costume Shop Manager, and other Production staff. The Apprentice will receive professional rehearsal and performance experience and training with resident and non-resident Equity Stage Managers in The Studio Theatre’s four-theatre, state-of-the-art complex.  The Studio Theatre produces at least 11 projects annually and operates under an Equity Small Professional Theatre contract (Level 10). 

In rehearsal, the Apprentice’s responsibilities include preparation of prompt books and rehearsal paperwork, coordinating rehearsal properties and costumes, and tracking line notes.  The Apprentice acts as the Floor Manager during performances, and is responsible for all backstage show operations. The Apprentice participates in a career-building curriculum while gaining exposure to all areas of theatre operations and is eligible to receive EMC points through the program.

Candidates must have Stage Management experience, be extremely organized and eager to learn on the job, and possess the discretion and flexibility to thrive in a busy theatre environment.
