When does the Conservatory offer classes?
The Conservatory offers classes for fall, spring, and summer semesters. During the fall and spring semesters, classes meet once per week. During the summer semester, adult classes meet twice a week and Young Actors classes meet four days a week.

Where are the classes held?
The Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory has six state-of-the-art classrooms on the third floor of The Studio Theatre building at 1501 14th street NW, Washington DC 20005.
Is there a registration deadline?
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and many classes are filled prior to the first class. You may request to be placed on a wait list and join the class if a space is available prior to the second class.

Is The Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory for beginners?
The Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory admits students of all levels of experience.
Which class should I begin with?

What ages are admitted in the Conservatory?
The Young Actors Program admits students ages 12-17. The adult program admits students over 18 years old.
Which Young Actors Ensemble should my child register for?
In the Young Actors Program there is a placement audition that determines which ensemble best suits your young actor. The first step is to register and your young actor will receive an appointment to audition for class placement. The Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory admits students with or without previous experience and no advance preparation is neccessary for the audition.
My child is in the Young Actors Program. May I come to class with him/her?
Classrooms and hallways are reserved for students’ use. Family members and/or friends are invited to wait in the Atrium/student lounge.

Do you offer workshops?
In addition to our regular classes, we offer weekend workshops. For more information on upcoming workshops, click here.
Can I audit classes?
Our curriculum is process-oriented and we give our students the opportunity to freely explore and discover without the influence of outside auditors. You have an excellent opportunity to see the work of our students at each semester’s Final Scenes. All acting, auditioning, music theatre and directing classes have a Final Scenes performance during the last class of the semester. How much do classes cost?
Workshops and classes range from $150 - $525. Please click here for information regarding pricing.
Do you offer financial aid?
Through Arts Motivating Youth (AMY), we reserve slots in all Young Actors Ensemble classes for scholarship students who have an interest in the performing arts but lack the financial resources. There is also a work study program for adults. For more information, click here.
What is your refund policy?
In the event that a student chooses to withdraw from a class, the $100 registration fee (per class/workshop) cannot be refunded.
The balance of paid tuition will be refunded if the student requests a refund in writing prior to or within three business days after the first class.
The balance of tuition for a workshop will be refunded if the student requests a refund in writing prior to the start of the workshop.
Will I get to perform onstage at The Studio Theatre?
Although many of our students get the opportunity to perform on our stages, The Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory is not a casting service. However, we inform students of all open auditions at The Studio Theatre and keep a bulletin board of opportunities at The Studio Theatre and elsewhere.
Apprentice FAQ
When are next season’s Apprenticeship position listings posted?
Apprentice positions are posted on our website around mid-January for the upcoming season, and begin the following July.
How competitive is the selection process?
We receive many applications for Apprenticeships. The level of competition varies depending on the position. Generally, the Literary and the Stage Management positions are the most competitive positions.
How does the selection process work?
Eligible applicants are contacted via email for a telephone interview with the Director of Education. This is followed by another telephone interview with the relevant department head. Then, three to four finalists for the position are selected for an in-person interview.
What kind of experience do I need to be eligible for an apprenticeship?
Apprentices at The Studio Theatre are assigned duties within the area of their apprenticeship. Therefore, the experience of the applicant should be appropriate to the position that they are applying for.
What is the deadline for applying for an apprentice position?
Apprentice positions are open until filled. The description on the website indicates when a position is filled.
Does The Studio Theatre offer short-term or part-time apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are full-time year-long positions.
Does The Studio Theatre provide housing for apprentices?
Currently nine of the ten positions provide housing. Apprentices live in single-or-double occupancy housing that is located within walking distance of the Theatre, in the heart of the exciting Dupont Circle area. Butler House, named after Susan L. Butler, Board Chair, is the Theatre’s newly renovated historical residence. It has fully furnished apartments, each with a full kitchen. It also has a rooftop deck, a common room for social activities and on-the-premises laundry facilities.
What kind of pay can be expected with an apprenticeship?
Apprentices receive a modest bi-weekly stipend in addition to free housing.
What kinds of responsibility does an apprentice have at the theatre?
Our apprentices are crucial members of the team in every aspect of production and administration, and the Theatre has high standards and expectations for them.
Do I need a car in Washington DC?
We do not recommend bringing a car to DC as an apprentice. The apprentice housing is located just a few blocks from the theatre, and Washington, DC has one of the largest public transportation networks in the country. Also, parking in the city for more than just a few hours can get expensive quickly!
Internship FAQ
When are your internships posted?
The summer program is posted on our website around end of January. The spring program is posted around end of December. The fall program is posted around end of July.
How does the selection process work?
Applicants are usually selected based on a telephone interview with the Director of Education followed by a telephone interview with the head of the department to which the intern is applying.
What is the deadline for applying for an internship?
The deadline for the summer program is usually around the end of March. The deadline for spring is usually around mid-January and the deadline for fall is usually around end of August.
Can I apply after the deadline has passed?
Intern positions are usually filled by the deadline. Occasionally a position is still open after the deadline has passed or a position has been added after the deadline. The description on our website will indicate if we are still accepting applications past the deadline.
Can I get course credit for an internship with The Studio Theatre?
Many universities offer programs that allow students to receive credit for internships completed with organizations not affiliated with the university. Check with your department head or advisor to see what steps you need to complete in order to receive credit. We will be happy to share information with your advisors regarding the responsibilities you are assigned during your time at The Studio Theatre along with an evaluation of your work.
Does The Studio Theatre provide housing for interns?
No, there is no housing provided for our interns. However, as Washington, DC is a destination for many summer interns in a variety of fields, many universities in the city offer summer housing designed specifically for students seeking internships. Many of our interns also stay with friends or family in the area.
Do interns get paid?
Internships are unpaid.
Can interns see shows at The Studio theatre?
Interns receive FREE tickets to shows at The Studio Theatre. In addition, there is often opportunity to see shows at other area theatres.
How long does an internship last?
Internships are usually two to four months. The summer program usually starts around May and end around August. The fall is usually September to December and the spring is usually January to April
What kinds of things will I do and learn as an intern at The Studio Theatre?
We offer internships in all areas of our Theatre, including production, administration, public relations and marketing, development, business, facilities, dramaturgy and production. While each intern will be assigned to a specific department for their general tasks, there are certain projects in which all interns will participate. Also, the Summer Intern Program offers weekly seminars during the course of the internship. Each seminar focuses on a different aspect of the theatre and gives the intern insight to each department.
